I bought THE AWESOME GIRL'S GUIDE for one reason - I absolutely raved about 32 CANDLES, the author's first novel. I loved 32 CANDLES so much that I am still recommending it, and I have given out at least 5 copies as gifts. I never read a plot synopsis of THE AWESOME GIRL's GUIDE, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I just knew I would support this author in any endeavor, and pre-purchased this book for my Kindle. So imagine my surprise when I was reading AWESOME GIRL"S GUIDE and I came to realize I could not relate to ANY of the characters. I didn't even like them! I have to say, I DO NOT have friends like these girls! (If I do, they are keeping secrets!)I was not so lost or confused when I was 28, 29, 30, etc. So I was a little impatient and intolerant of their rather glaring flaws. I kept waiting to like Sharita, Risa, Thursday, and it just wasn't happening. Instead, I kept thinking that they are all crazy! Not "they are different from me and I don't share their life view" crazy. I mean, I thought they were "these chicks need therapy" crazy. And I could not imagine where a novel about four young women in need of such psychological help was going to take me. I wasn't even sure I cared what would happen to Risa - I am rather unamused by foul-mouthed lesbian rockstars. I was thinking, "oh no! I am not going to like Mrs. Carter's novel!"
But I am writing this review because I was WRONG WRONG WRONG! I was about 40 percent through the novel when this little light started to come on, and I started to see the women as complicated women, as opposed to characters. By the time I hit the halfway point, I pretty much abandoned any thought of returning to the tedium of my day job. I spent the rest of the day reading the book under my desk. I laughed and cried by the end. And like any good story, it kind of changes you. And I wish I had a friend to discuss it with. As a result, I will be messaging a few friends, telling them, "hurry up and read this one, you've never read anything like it, and I really want to know what you think."
Somewhere underneath, all of us want the same thing, no matter how "screwed up" we are. We want jobs that don't kill our spirits. We want friends. And we want CRAZY LOVE. The other stuff varies, but this stuff seems to be universal. And that's the feeling I had when I finished this novel. I had more in common with these women than I thought. Just like they had more in common with each other than they originally realized. (I loved Sharita and Risa's discussion toward the end.) They could only judge each other up to a certain point.
I haven't decided if I love this book in the same way that I loved 32 CANDLES. Not that I really related to Davie's experience either (btw, Davie does make a guest appearance in this new work.) But it had a more immediate appeal. These girls are damaged in a different way. As I think it through, my conclusion is that THAT'S THE POINT! Black women looking for love are damaged in different ways. This is Sharita, Risa, Thursday, and Tammy's story.
And it's a good story. Makes me want to join a book club again!

The Awesome Girl Guide to Dating Extraordinary Men Ernessa T Carter Books Reviews
I absolutely loved this book. When I read the title I paused and though, ugh..I don't know if this will be good. But, let me tell you that I was pleasantly surprised! The author did a fantastic tying the 3 stories together and it had me up way later than I planned both nights it took me to devour the book! I absolutely loved each character and found I identified with their flaws! I particularly liked that each chapter began with a excerpt from the "book" that the characters read and how well it was tied into the story line. I finished this with such a warmth in my heart! I anticipate thinking about different points of the book and how I would react to them in my own life for weeks to come!
The Awesome Girl's Guide to Dating Extraordinary Men leapt into one of my favorite books of 2013. When I saw it on twitter, I thought the title odd but bought it immediately without question because 32 Candles had previously been one of my favorites. Ms. Carter writes.
Immediately I became immersed in the characters and their lives and the languid, luscious way the story unfolded. Immediately we were given sketches of who Thursday, Risa, Sarita and Tammy were but we were allowed to see and feel them in peeled back layers of great storytelling.
I loved that the women were flawed and still friends and when secrets were revealed that the other friends weren't privy to I felt the betrayal. Their love relationships were also a complicated mix that I found delightful to explore and get to know the reasons behind them. There are also wonderful backstory characters and family members.
I highly recommend this book to all who love great storytelling with unique and flawed characters. These women will touch you and make you care for them while sometimes becoming exasperated at them. It's also a glorious 494 pages.

I'll be honest - if someone told me a summary of this book, I'd probably roll my eyes, dismiss it as "basic" and not bother reading it. The heroines can seem like stock characters - the bohemian, the grind, the princess, the artist. Their stories are the stuff of the (mostly) usual female fantasies. Their problems are the usual problems, the reader can diagnose their fatal flaws almost immediately, etc.
Except. EXCEPT. Something about this book transcends the genre. It was hard for me to put a finger on it, but I suddenly began to really care about these characters. And I think the reason is the writing - in fact, the writing is so fantastic that it has that rare quality of disappearing behind the story and the characters. And everything stops seeming "basic" and you stop feeling manipulated as a reader, and you just go along for the ride and feel really sad when it's over.
I really find it hard to say why I love this book when so many similar books have turned me off. I suspect it's the writing. I also suspect it's because there's something a little more raw about these heroines. They surprise you when you least expect it. Like when the good-girl grind has to restrain herself from physical violence. Or when the flaky artiste turns coldly pragmatic when it comes to her business.
It's just that elusive thing - a really good book that also happens to be a deliciously easy read. I'll look for more from Ms. Carter.
