23rd Century Romance Jake Hartnell 9781492134237 Books Reviews

A lot of the best science fiction not only lets you into the world the author has imagined, it also reveals something new about the contemporary world at the time of writing. This is most certainly true of 23rd Century Romance, which despite the title is more dystopian Blade Runner than bombastic interstellar space opera. Dealing with issues of corporate encroachment on public space, tech convergence, and, of course, love, it's a story to which most readers will hopefully relate.

Though the tone is quite often bleak, it's also a very funny book that moved me to laughter several times. Like the Scott Pilgrim series of comics - and, to a lesser extent, the film - it speaks clearly and warmly from the snug heart of geek culture; crucially, like Scott the protagonist is a likable one. The pacing and quip-filled rhythm of dialogue in particular is reminiscent of webcomics like Questionable Content or Sam & Fuzzy; goofy, playful and full of plenty of in-jokes. The writing outside of dialogue flows well, and many first-time author pitfalls appear to have been circumvented. As you would expect from a romance, there's no great drama but the novel is nevertheless difficult to put down at times.

Ultimately it's a loving homage to classic science fiction, wrapped in a compelling love story. Perhaps the current issues raised will eventually date the book, but for now they add an extra layer of interest to what is a very strong first novel. Let's hope this is not the last time Hartnell turns his hand to the genre.
23CR is dripping with elegant descriptions of imaginative futuristic artifacts and provocative relationships that will tease your mind for months. It's a short, well paced blend of edgy action and immersive detail with great characters.

The book really captures the confusion and social complexities of growing up online. The story cleverly takes place amidst empowering and problematic technologies that vary in maturity almost as much as the 20-something protagonist's attitudes towards sex. As such, anyone who has been emboldened or bitten by a new social technology will immediately be able to relate to this book.

Finally, unlike most new-wave sci-fi, you won't get bombarded by mindless self-aggrandizing detail that detracts from the story. Here - the characters are so honest, genuine, and enriched by their environment - it's debatable whether or not this new author even realizes what he's created.
I was very delighted to read this book. I believe it describes the state of mind of someone who has grown up with the internet. It is a nice Sci-fi book which partly shows the implications of today's trends in a cyber future. It is also a kind of philosophical story It tries to tell us that whatever the technology of our time is, human beings will remain the same people with feelings, but also with a quest of justice and an attempt to follow an ethical and loving way of life.
Great book, describing a dystopian future where the virtual world took over the real world. The main character struggles between is will to have a relationship in the real world and the simplicity of just being pleasured by a computer program.
The plot is well paced and could also be a satire of nowadays addiction to online dating/social networks.
From the first pages to the last, it will surprise you; bringing laughter, tears, and a hell of a lot of thought and emotion. This dystopian work (the likes of Orwell and Wilde) brings to light controversial, yet important topics, such as, the future of sex, relationships, and the changes developing in our communication patterns, which are seldom discussed in the literary works of today's society.

Though satirical in nature, as I read this, the complexity and relatability of the characters struck resonant chords with what I feel are prominent challenges of today's relationships (platonic, romantic, and sexual), in regards to the changing communication mechanisms of the "modern human"- one who's life is rife with technology.

Do yourself a favor, and read this book. It resonated deeply with the emotions, challenges, hopes, and dreams, which I feel are prominent in the youth of today, and maybe the 23rd century, as well.
