This short fiction collection assembles 16 stories, most of them published from 2000-2010, by Ed Lynskey. The crime fiction first appeared in Shots, Thuglit, Mississippi Review Online, and Crime Scene Scotland. The editors selecting the stories include Sarah Weinman, Allan Guthrie, Anthony Neil Smith, Todd Robinson, and Russel D. McLean. The stories range from soft-boiled like “The Thief of Hearts” and “Mr. Weems’ Dog” to the more noirish, hardboiled “Laetrile” and “How to Defuse a Terrorist.” The pair of long stories “Sins of the Father?” and “Juror Number Three” are the unpublished bonus titles. “Mr. Weems’ Dog” features P.I. Sharon Knowles with her cast as a university student while she interns at the Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department. Five stories feature the P.I. Frank Johnson series character. He and his sidekick bounty hunter Gerald Peyton appear in seven well-received books, including PELHAM FELL HERE and THE BLUE CHEER. The recurring character Payne, a perennial hard-luck dude, stars in the pair of noir stories, “Lakota Road” and “Emily, Thrice Stoned.”

"Smoking on Mount Rushmore"Are you the type of person that reads everyday no matter what your schedule is? I am! Do you have to plan your schedule or work around your reading? I do! This may be the perfect book for you. It was for me.
"Smoking on Mount Rushmore" is made up of many (not just one) short stories. I found myself being able to read a story in between classes at work and in between dogs at home. There was a short story on just about every topic imaginable such as the Loch Ness Monster, Lakota Road, relationships on every level. The difference I found was Ed's endings. I can only compare Ed's endings of his stories to Lawrence Block. They each took a twist that came out of the blue.
Ed's writing is clear as is his characters. There's no confusion in the dialogue or mindset of his characters. My favorites featured Ed's P.I. Frank. Since I'm addicted to mysteries I am planning on continuing my reading of Frank in Ed's other mysteries.
In short, there is a story for everyone in this book and you're not just paying for one. I enjoyed these stories and recommend this book to every avid reader of mysteries and then some.

Smoking on Mount Rushmore 16 New Selected Crime Short Stories edition by Ed Lynskey Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Smoking On Mount Rushmore is a tight and satisfying collection of stories by Ed Lynskey. He sketches scenes and characters with deftness. These stories are by turns, dark, and humorous, but with a dryness that Lynskey uses to good effect. Each story exists in its own tightly defined microcosm. They are highly recommended.
This collection of sixteen diverse, entertaining stories from the sure hand of Ed Lynskey is a real treat for readers and a real bargain at the price of $2.99.
Most of the stories have a crime element--some softboiled, some hardboiled, a few somewhere in between. There are touches of mystery, a bit of humor, and several nifty twists.
Lynskey's recurring PI character, Frank Johnson (featured in seven novels and numerous short stories) appears here in five of the stories, ranging from the poignant "No Thumbs" to the blunt and violent "How To Defuse A Terrorist".
"Lakota Road", another quietly poignant tale, features another recurring character named Payne, whom Lynskey describes as "a hard-luck dude". He is also featured in a second tale entitled "Emily, Thrice Stoned".
The title piece, "Smoking on Mount Rushmore", is a quirky, sexy tale with carefully layered character insight and another of those nifty twist endings I mentioned earlier.
I also mentioned the sure hand of author Lynskey, which, of course, is evident in all the stories. His dialogue snaps and he is especially adept at presenting the West Virginia working class along with their habits and outlooks.
If you're not yet familiar with Lynskey's work, you can start right here to correct that oversight. I predict you will then quickly be in search of more reading with his byline attached to it.
Recommended.
Smoking on Mount Rushmore
I thought this story started out as a light-hearted trip for two young lovers before he goes off to serve his country. Then the characters develop and the story gets deeper and darker and then suddenly the end. What a surprise and twist at the end. “Sweet Dreams , my sweet cuckold.” An awesome last line.
This book is a compilation of 16 stories, all of them entertaining.
I especially liked, “Juror Number Three,” about a woman serving time on a jury and wondering why her husband hasn’t answered any of his messages. Where is he and what is he doing? She receives some strange news that she didn’t see coming and when she reacts, it’s not a happy ending for someone.
“Camera Shy,” was a great story along the vein of “Dolores Claiborne.” I love it when an abused character turns the tables on an abuser.
I’ve also read, “The Blue Cheer,” and “Lake Charles,” and I think that Ed Lynskey is a talented writer and I want to read more of his Frank Johnson, P.I. series. He’s great with character development, suspense and twisting plots and I thoroughly enjoyed every story.
A nice collection of tales from early in the author's career. Crime stories, both hard and soft-boiled. a piece or two not really crime.
I particularly enjoyed the five Frank Johnson short stories. A lot of the territory in the stories I've been over more than once. Living in Rockingham County, just a mile or so from the Virginia border, a number of the areas mentioned I knew ell. Even the tale that ventured into Knoxville, Tennessee. A fine introduction to the P.I. and his friend, Gerald Peyton, to someone who hasn't read any of the novels. need to rectify that if zi can ever find the time.
Recommended to all crime fans.
