This is really two stories connected, in one novel. The author hits the ground running. The primary story is a plane crash. When the book begins the plane has already crashed and there is no unnecessary build up to it.Dr. Reichs, being an M.E. herself, writes in great descriptive, medical detail. Many times descriptions get somewhat boring in novels; not hers. The woman knows from personal experience what she writes about.
She also does very well on the cause of the catastrophe. Having been in the airline business, I can say her description of events on the crash are spot on and plausible.
Tempe Brennan M.E., protagonist, is ever professional. However, she finds false accusations fired at her. Why? Reading the book, it becomes clear. She also stumbles upon a small abandoned homestead during her crash investigation; beginning the second novel within a novel.
I would have been happy if the author had kept Dr. Brennan on her typical road of realism. Instead, the author introduces a story-line which really isn't probable at all and just does not fit the character and the book. Its "out there" and "over the top." It seems better suited to a supernatural book than a Dr. Tempe Brennan story. This, for me, killed the book. For me, all logic ended after the source of the aircraft accident was found. I skimmed the rest.
I still give this four stars due to the very well done descriptive writing and the well done character development, along with some tongue in cheek humor. Sadly, not one of my favorites due to the second half.

Reichs reminds me of Patricia Cornwell in her forensic-scientific background. She weaves her education and experience into her novels. Her heroine, Temperance Brennan, is a forensic anthropologist who ends up investigating a plane crash which leads her to several old murders. There is never a lull in any of Reichs' books, and this is no exception. Temperance investigates her way through many clues, most of which no one else has picked up on, eventually solving the murders. If you like good murder mysteries and thrillers, and are interested in learning about forensic anthropology, coroner's and police procedures, you'll like this book.
This was another well-written exciting book in the series. Temperance Brennan is on the scene of a plane crash in North Carolina when she discovers that the bones of one of the victims are not those of a recent crash victim. Her discovery gets her thrown off the case so she starts to dig deeper.
I have yet to find a Kathy Reichs book that I don't like! My only complaint about any of her books is that I just want to keep reading them and too much time between books can set you back and take you longer to re-pickup the story where it left off because there is a lot of French phrases throughout.
Before buying this book I read several of the reviews. Most were positive. A few were negative about the amount of information was written about stem cells and the history of the area where this book takes place. I found that added to the book. Kathy Reichs has a great way of telling a story. She is very knowledgeable about what a medical examiner does and tells us without getting too over our heads. I did find it interesting in this book that Tempe, the main character, complained twice about always being around dead bodies and death.
This is the fourth book from Kathy Reichs I have read (reading them in order), and have found each of them to be very interesting. The plots seem the same at first glance, but are far from identical. The consistent use of a limited number of characters keeps the stories easy to follow!
Kathy Reich's books are rather redundant. She always has a victim role, a golly gee did that man, woman, child, car, train, ambulance try to kill me mode, and delayed reactions to so many things which she makes so obviously ominous that I want to kill her myself. These books are a lesson in futility.....so far. I am going to skip ahead to the latest one and if she doesn't drop the formula by then, well....its over between us forever. (Which would take her character at least 5 chapters to get).
This book by Kathy Reichs ranks among her best. Somehow I'd missed reading this book in the series and now I'm very glad to catch up. Normally, when I find a book which is brilliantly written as this, I can't put it down. In FATAL VOYAGE the opposite was true. To prolong my reading of the story, I had read short passages only of Temperance Brennan's journey in her pursuit of truth and justice - so great was the excitement and emotion. The story revolves around an air crash which involves Temp in a convoluted case involving the identifying of human remains and the consequences of her investigations. The mix of real-life observations, excitement, empathy and accuracy in Kathy's writings make her a giant among storytellers and in particular, forensic scientists. A great read.
